Woolwine

Nestled at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Woolwine is notable for its covered bridges and proximity to natural attractions. Fairy Stone State Park, located nearby, encompasses 4,741 acres of forested land and features a 168-acre lake adjoining the Philpott Reservoir. As one of the original six Virginia state parks established in 1936, it offers a variety of recreational activities, including hiking, fishing, boating, and swimming. The park is also renowned for its unique “fairy stones,” staurolite crystals that naturally form cross shapes, which visitors can search for in designated areas. Additionally, Philpott Lake, a 2,880-acre reservoir, boasts 100 miles of pristine shoreline and is surrounded by approximately 7,000 acres of forested land managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The lake offers ample opportunities for boating, fishing, and wildlife observation, making Woolwine a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.
